Down Syndrome Center - Mission and Overview
The Medical University of South Carolina's Down Syndrome Center consists of a multidisciplinary team whose goal is to
provide quality care in order to help each individual with Down syndrome reach his or her full potential and function as
independently as possible in all aspect of family, school and community life. We provide comprehensive medical management
and clinical services to Down syndrome patients and their families. Our multidisciplinary team develops and provides
individualized care for the complex medical and psychosocial problems confronting families affected by Down syndrome.
The Down Syndrome Center adheres to guidelines established by the Committee on Genetics of the American Academy of
Pediatrics.
The center is part of the Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital. The Children's Hospital provides
comprehensive clinical management and diagnostic services to children and families affect by Down syndrome. Patients,
in addition to the specific services of the Down Syndrome Center, have access to other hospital and clinical services.
MUSC Children's Hospital has earned top ranking from U.S. News & World Report, American Health Magazine, and The Best
Doctors in America. Child magazine continues to rank MUSC Children's Hospital as one of the top pediatric facilities
in the country.
MUSC participates in the Southeastern Regional Genetics Group (SERGG) which is a collaborative network of genetics and
newborn screening providers in nine southeastern states. The Children's Hospital's health system consists of a
comprehensive network of primary care physicians, specialists, services and programs - all dedicated to children.
Our approach is multidisciplinary and comprehensive. Board-certified geneticists, developmental pediatricians, speech
and language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, and licensed social workers comprehensively evaluate
patients and educate families on the genetic basis and associated risks of the Down syndrome diagnosis.
