Down Syndrome Center - Your First Visit
By providing a range of comprehensive services within one center, families can streamline their visits and receive a wide
range of various services without visiting multiple agencies and professionals. The child's initial visit can consist of
evaluations by a developmental pediatrician, a speech and language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a physical
therapist, and a social worker. Subsequent visits may involve referrals to other medical specialists within the MUSC
network, including audiology, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ENT), pulmonary
medicine, nutrition, psychology, and radiology. G. Shashidhar Pai, MD, senior advisor, and Angela LaRosa,MD, medical
director, lead the center's staff of caring physicians, nurses, and therapists.
At your initial appointment you should expect to:
- Discuss any concerns you have about your child
- Review your child's history (medical problems, developmental and behavioral issues, educational placements, therapies)
- Make sure your child is up-to-date on all recommended testing
- Conduct developmental testing
- Perform a physical examination
- Recommend further testing, therapies or educational programming
- Meet and consult with a speech, occupational, and/or physical therapist
