General Pediatrics Faculty

William T. Basco, MD William T. Basco, MD, MS
Dr. William Basco, Associate Professor and Director, Division of Pediatrics, has been a faculty member at MUSC since 1997. He is a former Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar, completing four years of research in the area of medical education, particularly the medical school admission process. Dr. Basco is co-director of Frontiers in Pediatrics, MUSC Pediatric Department's yearly CME program aimed at general pediatricians and other practitioners caring for children. Dr. Basco currently serves as Principle Investigator on the Academic Generalist/Heath Services Research Fellowship Grant and the Academic Administrative Units (Title VII) Grant. Dr. Basco currently has funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to evaluate outpatient pediatric prescribing errors.

Ronald J. Teufel, II, MD Ronald J. Teufel, II, MD, MSCR
Dr. Ron Teufel, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, has been a faculty member since 2004. He is a former Academic Generalist Fellow at MUSC. Dr. Teufel is Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Section. His clinical interests include the care of hospitalized children with the use of Evidence-based Medicine. He is also a Health Services Researcher with a focus on hospital based quality improvement efforts for children.

J. Routt Reigart, MD J. Routt Reigart, MD
Dr. Reigart, general pediatrics director, has conducted university affiliated clinical trials since 1971 and is professor of pediatrics at MUSC. His special research interests include children's environmental health issues, general pediatrics, and toxicology (lead poisoning prevention and education activities since 1972; state wide screening initiatives since 1975; CDC chair for the Childhood Lead Poisoning Advisory Committee, and the USEPA chair for the Children's Health Protection Advisory Committee; member of USEPA/USDA/Tolerance Reassessment Advisory Committee and the FIFRA Science Advisory Panel).

Andrea P. Summer, MD Andrea P. Summer, MD
Dr. Andrea Summer, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, is a pediatric hospitalist and co-director of the MUSC International Adoption Clinic. In addition to founding and conducting the International Adoption Clinic, Dr. Summer is also director of the MUSC Pediatric Travel Medicine Clinic. Her research interests include medical and developmental issues of internationally adopted children and improving access to health care for underserved children.


James R. Roberts, MD, MPH James R. Roberts, MD, MPH
Dr. James Roberts, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, is the director of the South Carolina Pediatric Practice Research Network (SCPPRN). He joined the MUSC faculty in 1997, and has been conducting clinical research since 1996. He completed a General Academic Pediatric fellowship and earned a Master of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He currently serves as the co-director of Frontiers in Pediatrics, MUSC Department of Pediatrics' annual CME program. His research interests include children's environmental health hazards, environmental triggers of asthma, pesticide toxicity, and the management of lead toxicity in children. Additional research activities in the SCPPRN include vaccine delivery, quality improvement, environmental tobacco smoke exposure, obesity, and vitamin D deficiency.

Patricia G. McBurney, MD Patricia G. McBurney, MD, MSCR
Dr. Patricia McBurney has been on faculty in the department of pediatrics since 2002. She graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Medicine in 1997 and completed her pediatric residency at the Medical College of Georgia in 2000. She completed the Academic Generalist Fellowship in Pediatrics at MUSC in 2002. In January 2009, she was promoted to an Associate Professor of Pediatrics. Currently, she works as a pediatric hospitalist. Additionally, she serves as the pediatric clerkship co-director and her research interests are in medical education.

David Mills, MD David Mills, MD
Dr. David Mills, a pediatric clinical instructor, joined the General Pediatric faculty as a pediatric hospitalist in 2009. He received his MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his residency at MUSC, where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Pediatrics from 2008 to 2009. With a focus on pediatric education, Dr. Mills won the MUSC Medical Student teaching award in 2006 and 2008. He is currently in charge of incorporating educational technology into the residency program. Dr. Mills is also a member of the South Carolina Pediatric Practice Research Network, with an emphasis on an educational outreach program designed to improve communication between inpatient and outpatient providers and deliver online educational resources to community pediatric practices.

James McElligott, MD, MS James McElligott, MD, MS
Dr. James McElligott joined the Pediatric faculty in 2009. He completed both his pediatric residency and his Academic Generalist fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. He received a Masters in Science of Clinical Research through the Generalist Fellowship in 2009. His clinical and research interests include health disparities, vaccine delivery and international medicine.


William Randazzo, MD William Randazzo, MD
Dr. William Randazzo, assistant professor of pediatrics, has been a faculty member since 2007. He is currently the Director of the Level I Nursery and Associate Pediatric Program Director. He received his MD from the University of Bordeaux II, Bordeaux France in 1982. Before coming to MUSC he was in private practice for over 20 years. He has used his clinical experience to teach residents and medical students. He developed a school-based clinic and is helping put together an advocacy curriculum for the residents.


Sarah Mennito, MD Sarah Mennito, MD, MSCR
Dr. Sarah Mennito joined the Pediatric faculty as a hospitalist in 2009. She earned her M.D. at the University of Maryland and completed her residency in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics and the Academic Generalist fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. She earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research in 2009. She is currently the Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency Program Director. Her research interests include medical education, resident assessment, and transition medicine.


Timothy Hartzog, MD Timothy Hartzog, MD
Dr. Timothy Hartzog graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1997 and completed his internship in Medicine/Pediatrics at Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He did his Pediatric Residency at TC Thompson's Children's Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. Post-residency has been in Private Practice Pediatrics and as a Pediatric Hospitalist. Dr. Hartzog has been a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Hospital Medicine leadership since 2004. Currently, Dr. Hartzog is Medical Director of Information Technology and is working to implement Computerized Provider Order Entry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Timothy Hartzog is also part of Society of Hospital Medicine and American Academy of Pediatrics committees on Health Information Technology. Dr. Hartzog is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric and a Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Elizabeth O'Brien, RN
Beth O'Brien joined the General Pediatrics team in 2007 as the General Pediatrics clinical research coordinator. She has been a nurse for over 32 years and has extensive experience in working with clinical trials. She is currently the network coordinator for the South Carolina Pediatric Practice Research Network (SCPPRN), as well as the coordinator for all clinical trials in the Division of General Pediatrics.

Katherine Freeland, BS
Katie Freeland, research specialist, received her BS in Psychology/Sociology from Charleston Southern University in 2006. She joined the General Pediatric research staff in 2007. Her current research focus is on immunization delivery within the South Carolina Pediatric Practice Research Network (SCPPRN) and Teaching Immunization Delivery and Evaluation (TIDE).
