About the Division

The physicians and nurse practitioners in the Pediatric Pulmonary Division at the MUSC Children's Hospital have expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of respiratory illnesses. These illnesses include asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing, chronic respiratory failure, airway problems and aspiration, chronic cough, interstitial lung disease, restrictive lung disease and sickle cell related lung disease.

Additionally, our clinical and research faculty and collaborators have strong research interests in cystic fibrosis, surfactant deficiencies, asthma and airway inflammation and participate actively in laboratory-based research projects with NIH, CFRI and CFF funding as well as a number of clinical trials.

In the spirit of providing the best care possible to all of our pulmonology patients, we have entered into several collaborations with our colleagues in other specialties.

Our Comprehensive Cystic Fibrosis Center provides quality, multi-disciplinary care to CF patients throughout the state. Patients in this clinic are seen by the pulmonologists, nutritionist, social worker, respiratory therapist, genetics counselor, and pharmacist.

Our new Asthma Center is a collaborative effort between Pediatric Pulmonology, the MUSC emergency department and the Pediatric Hospitalist's that treat asthmatics in different areas of the children's hospital. Along with an asthma nurse educator/coordinator, this collaborative group has establish standard protocols for asthma treatment and for coordination of follow-up that will optimize the asthma care provided to all children seen at MUSC.

The Pediatric Airway Center is a collaborative effort between Dr. David White of ENT, Pediatric Pulmonology, and Speech Therapy that provides coordinated care to children with anatomical airway abnormalities or chronic aspiration.

The Sickle cell/Pulmonary Clinic meets once a month to allow Dr. Jackson of Hematology and Dr. Bowman to discuss problems specific to this population of patients and individual treatment plans that will best serve them. Resources at MUSC available to our division include:

  • Fiberoptic bronchoscopy (with lavage)

  • Fully equipped sleep laboratory
  • Thoracic surgeons experienced in lung and airway procedures
