The Medical University of South Carolina has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. It has expanded from a small private college for the training of physicians to a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health care personnel. One of the University's top educational areas is its pediatric department, a department of the College of Medicine.

The College of Medicine was the South's first medical school, pioneered clinical teaching and its faculty members wrote some of America’s first medical textbooks. For more than 170 years the College of Medicine has been dedicated to the training of physicians with the MUSC Children's Hospital at the heart of training pediatric health care professionals.
