Sarah Hancock
Letter from Sarah's mom, Elizabeth Hancock

Dear Friends,

I am writing to you today on behalf of my daughter Sarah and MUSC Children's Hospital, not with a story of sadness but of profound hope and happiness.

Sarah Hancock Sarah was diagnosed with an incurable disease - diabetes - when she was just 5 years old. Although my husband and I were overwhelmed by the news at first, we have since been comforted by the knowledge that she could not be in better hands than those at MUSC Children's Hospital.

In short, these remarkable doctors, nurses and therapists have provided us with everything we need to manage Sarah's disease and provide her with as normal a childhood as possible. Today, the hospital is now working to build an islet cell transplant center, which may soon lead to a cure for this disease that affects Sarah and more than 250,000 other South Carolinians.

For her father and me, one of the most touching aspects of Sarah's care was the fact that much of it was made possible through the generosity of strangers - people who, out of the kindness of their hearts, made gifts to the Children's Hospital. Private gifts enable the hospital to build the best facilities, recruit the top specialists and acquire the latest technologies possible. As a result, we have a beautiful, happy little girl and the possibility of a cure for the disease that afflicts her.

I have seen the power of human kindness and generosity, and it truly does make a difference. That is why I am writing you today - to ask you to consider making a gift to this wonderful place. In doing so, you can help make the year ahead a time of hope and healing for thousands of children like Sarah and their families. I cannot think of a more precious or gratifying gift.

Elizabeth Hancock
