Beards for Babies
What is it?
A fundraiser started by the MUSC pediatric residents in 2009 to help raise money for worthwhile ventures within the Pediatric Residency Program, the MUSC Children's Hospital Fund, and beyond.
This year the contest will take place March 1-31. The fundraiser will benefit three different causes:
- The Safe Kids program, which will provide bicycle helmets to local children in Charleston to help keep them safe.
- The Pediatric International Health elective, which will help allow pediatric resident doctors to travel overseas to provide care to children in underdeveloped countries.
- The creation of a "Wilderness Medicine" elective, to help pediatric residents learn to care for patients in rural areas or those with specific environmental injuries, such as bites and stings, near-drowning, heat-related injuries, etc.
How do I participate?
- Don't forget to e-mail us your weekly pictures! (millsd@musc.edu)
- The Pre-Beard Party: Held at O'Malley's Bar and Grille on March 2, the Kickoff Party was a huge success. See the beard gallery for pictures from the paparazzi!
- The Shave Date: On March 1, "Beard Growers" must be clean shaven.
- The Growing Period: Grow a beard (which you can trim as much as you like to remain professional, or not at all) up until April 1. Make a donation (self-selected) to Beards for Babies to obtain a button to pin on your shirt/white coat, so patients, their families, and colleagues know why you decided against shaving for the month.
- The Beard Chronicles: Take weekly pictures of your beautiful beard and e-mail it to us at millsd@musc.edu. We will post them on the Web site.
- The Beard Finale: On April 1 at 12 noon on the eighth floor of the Storm Eye Institute, we will have a contest with multiple categories: Scruffiest Beard, Worst Beard, Best Mustache, etc. Prizes will be given to the winners.
What if I'm a girl, or just want to support someone?
Make a self-selected donation to get a Beard Supporter button by clicking on the "Sponsor" tab below. That way you can show your pride for your rugged beard-grower in style.
What if I'm a Blue Devil?
That's right, MUSC, we've got company! A special thank you to our friends at Duke University for participating in Beards for Babies. The Devil's Den is well represented, even if poorly groomed. Send us your addresses to get your buttons, and send us your photos to upload to the Web site!
Where can I get my button?
Buttons are available now! You can get them in the following ways:
- Drop by and pick on up on the sixth floor of the Children's Hospital, in rooms 685, 684 or 688.
- Send your address (for campus mail or regular mail) to millsd@musc.edu, and we will mail them to you.
- Come to our booth at the Radiothon, March 3-5, between 12 and 1:30 p.m., held in the Student Library, and sign up there.
