Blood Disorders : Sickle Cell Program
Our pediatric sickle cell program offers comprehensive services to patients diagnosed with a hemoglobinopathy. The sickle cell team consists of the following health care providers:
- Pediatrician specializing in sickle cell disease
- Pediatric hematologist
- Nurse coordinator
- Nurse community case manager
- Social workers
- Psychologist
- Nutritionist
- Representatives from other disciplines, as needed
The program also is actively involved in developing new therapies, including a clinical drug trial with Hydroxyurea and a bone marrow transplantation program for sickle cell disease, and participates in national trials such as the Preoperative Transfusion Study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
