Mandibular Distraction: An Overview

Dr. Christopher Discolo, assistant professor of Ear, Nose, and Throat at the Medical University of South Carolina, discusses a procedure known as mandibular distraction. He explains how this procedure is used to correct eating and breathing issues in very young children who are born with a small jaw. He compares the benefits of this procedure to others used to bypass the problem, whereas mandibular distraction more directly addresses the issue. Dr. Discolo describes the typical post-operative care needs which will be the responsibility of the parent after the child leaves the hospital.
