Letter From Our Chair

L. Lyndon Key, MD Professor and Chairman Department of Pediatrics |
Dear Faculty and Friends:
As we celebrate the first anniversary of the Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute we reflect back on the
opportunities this remarkable institute has provided us. In just a short amount of time we have come so far and with
much joy and anticipation we look forward to the journey and discoveries ahead of us.
However, in the moments of our celebration we must stop and take a moment to thank our supporters. It is important for us
to remember the wonderful gifts that we have been given by our benefactors. Many have given significantly of both their
time and wealth. Without their support none of our successes would be possible. With their generous contributions the doors
of the region's largest and most comprehensive pediatric research center were opened to a world of discoveries and advancements
in pediatric health care.
I had an opportunity earlier this month to address the audience at the second annual Darius Rucker concert, spotlighting the
music of Frank Sinatra. The atmosphere was electric and the pride in our Children's Research Institute and South Carolina was
overwhelming. As I spoke to this group, I could feel the support for the all of the programs we have developed and nurtured over
the past year. More importantly, it became obvious to me that everyone was moved by the notion that local discoveries will
improve the lives of South Carolina's children. Everyone attending expressed their admiration for the MUSC Children's Hospital
and its lead role in training and research.
On behalf of everyone at the MUSC Children's Hospital and the Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute, I am proud to have
had the support of so many wonderful individuals. Whether the donation was $5 or $1 million, every donation remains invaluable.
As a community we made a dream of one man a reality that will impact so many.
The most important thing for all of us to remember is that research into the causes and cures of childhood diseases are just as
important as the clinical facilities when it comes to developing preventive strategies, treatments, and cures.
The Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute is not a stand-alone facility, but a critical part of the vibrant and
ever-improving pediatric health care services at the Medical University of South Carolina. Each of us should take pride in what
has been accomplished and continue to work hard to use this venture as a model for future expansion of the programs at MUSC Children's
Hospital. The love, the generosity, the devotion and the inventions will allow us to continue to deliver and cultivate the best
physicians, the best care, and the most advanced treatments.
I invite you to visit this link to the list of sponsors for the Children's Research Institute.
Sincerely,

L. Lyndon Key, MD
