Letter From Our Chair
 |
L. Lyndon Key, MD Professor and Chairman Department of Pediatrics |
Dear Faculty, Staff, and Friends,
Spring is here, and the sights and sounds of renewal are all around us. It's important that we look at the accomplishments of the
past year and the challenges of the coming academic year. The Children's Hospital is not just a building. It's an enterprise that
serves the community's children and provides them a chance to grow into healthy adults.
Our missions are: "Discovering, Understanding, and Healing." It is important to note that "discovery" is listed as
our first priority. Without discovery, we wander blindly. With discovery through research, we're able to highlight the problems and
understand the pathophysiology and psychology of disease. Discovery allows us to translate our knowledge into "healing."
Yet it's important to remember that not all healing is based upon scientific advances. Our caring and "understanding" of each
other is crucial to our mission as healers. Sometimes a word heals wounds more effectively than intravenous pain killers. It's
important to understand the problem before using the newest CT, the strongest new medications or the most sophisticated surgical
techniques. Thus, "healing" results from preparation through innovation and education.
Our mission does not come without a price. We need your help to make our children's hospital great. In using the word, "our,"
I want to imply that creating a healthy lifestyle requires the support of everyone in our society. We need everyone to understand that
the people working at the Children's Hospital work tirelessly and often, sacrificially, to help children. Our goal is to provide the very
best care that can be obtained anywhere in the world, right here in Charleston.
I am very proud to be a part of this university. It allows those of us who work here a chance to create the healthy children who ultimately
grow into the healthy adults of South Carolina.
We are proud to have the opportunity to see patients, to study disease, to teach students to become healthcare providers, and to develop new
and better therapies. The smile on the face of every parent who leaves our doors with a happy, healthy child is the ultimate reward. The
building of a society of healthier adults who are growing up as healthy children is our most important legacy.
Sincerely,

L. Lyndon Key, MD
