Wal-Mart celebrates 20 years of giving to children's hospitals

On Thursday, May 31, 2007, Wal-Mart celebrated 20 years of supporting Children's Miracle Network (CMN) and local children's hospitals, including MUSC Children's Hospital. To celebrate, Wal-Mart headquarters selected 20 of their top fundraising stores across the United States to help celebrate at the same time on Thursday. Our very own Supercenter Wal-Mart #3367 at Centre Point in North Charleston was selected because they are currently #4 in the country for their CMN fundraising efforts.

During the celebration, announcements were made by North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, Dr. Bernard Maria, Director of the DCRI, and Trish Aker, the Supercenter Wal-Mart Store Manager. Representatives from the North Charleston police and fire departments, Charleston Riverdogs, and the South Carolina Stingrays were all on hand for the celebration.

The real celebrity of this event was Brandon Peek, CMN's Champion Child of 2007, representing South Carolina and MUSC Children's Hospital. Brandon led a $1000 shopping spree for our Child Life Department, donated by Wal-Mart.

Brandon has been a patient of MUSC Children's Hospital since birth. He is 13 years old, attends Alston Middle School in Summerville, and has cerebral palsy. Brandon was selected to be the 2007 Champion Child of SC in October of 2006. Since starting his reign in January, Brandon has traveled to Washington, DC to meet the President of the United States and has traveled to Walt Disney World in Florida for the annual Children's Miracle Network Celebration with all the other Champion Children representing the other 49 states. There he met and mingled with celebrities such as Tracey Byrd, Miss America Tara Nelson, Mary Lou Retton, Jon Schneider, Marie Osmond, and others. During the rest of 2007, Brandon will represent MUSC Children's Hospital at numerous events as a local celebrity.

During the month of May, Wal-Mart aimed to raise $20 million dollars nationally to commemorate their 20th Anniversary. At any Lowcountry Wal-Mart, throughout May, cashiers asked patrons to purchase a "Miracle Balloon" for $1, to benefit MUSC Children's Hospital.

Wal-Mart is the largest contributor to CMN hospitals nationwide having raised $388 million in their 20 years as a national sponsor. In the past five years, local Wal-Marts raised more than $600,000 for us and have a goal of $350,000 in 2007. In meeting this year's goal, they will be given a naming opportunity in the MUSC Children's Hospital.
