Did you know? • 58 percent of patients at children's hospitals across the country are under the age of five. • Children's hospitals receive approximately 2.3 million emergency room visits each year. • The care that is provided in the United States' major teaching hospitals, including MUSC, is focused on most of the complex and rare conditions in children in their affiliated children's hospital. At MUSC Children's Hospital we have spent a lot of time and effort educating the community on the unique and special care that is needed when caring for children and why this facility is the best place for them. Clinically, the physiology of children is different from adults and our physicians and staff members are trained specifically to treat injuries and diseases in children. Furthermore, there is specialization based on age. There is a big difference in treating a neonate and a 15 year old and at MUSC Children's Hospital, we are always prepared to provide specialized care for children of all ages. Along with the obvious clinical advantages for children being treated at children's hospitals, another thing to consider is the care given to their families. We feel very strongly about providing support for the caregivers and loved ones as well. Our staff members always take time to involve the families in the care of their children and support them as they go through our programs. Children's hospitals are an essential part of our health care system. The bottom line is that children are special.
