A New Beginning
 |
Summer has arrived, and the latest batch of MUSC medical students has graduated and taken the oath, ready to take what they've learned and head on to internships. Among them are 18 students who have chosen to go into pediatric programs, both here at MUSC and at teaching universities across the U.S. and beyond.

I have two reasons to be particularly proud of our MUSC Children's Hospital this month. As the Medical Director, I am delighted to announce that our Children's Heart Program was ranked by US News & World Report in the top 20 such programs nationally (#19). A Loss to the Children's Hospital
 |
During the last four years we have been fortunate to work with a very active Family Advisory Council. This group is comprised of parents who have had children in various parts of our hospital ranging from the NICU to the Burn Unit. Does our Practice Reflect the Evidence? A look at treatments for Epilepsy
 |

Maria, Executive Director of the Darby Children's Research Institute, and her other co-authors, she first looked at the evidence for treatment options for epilepsy, and then asked a group of practicing child neurologists about their actual management of this condition. Her article is interesting not only for its comparison of recommendations to practice, but also for her attempt to thoroughly assess the level of available evidence.

ARE YOU READY? Stage Your Change!
Have you heard? Achieving optimal weight for health is all about balancing the energy or calories in food with exercise. Usually, this means increasing exercise and decreasing high calorie foods such as sugared beverages, fried foods, and sweets. We know this but discover barriers to actually embracing change in behavior for many reasons (favorite excuses). The time bomb is ticking. The choice is yours. Is now the time for you? Are you ready to change?

The MUSC community was deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of Christina Akabidavis and one of her twin daughters, Marcushire ("Cushire") and thankful for the survival of Maurishire ("Rishire"). We celebrated their lives at their memorial service on Friday, May 16, 2008 and we acknowledged how they touched the lives of everyone who knew them.
