Update From Our Administrator

A Loss to the Children's Hospital

During the last four years we have been fortunate to work with a very active Family Advisory Council. This group is comprised of parents who have had children in various parts of our hospital ranging from the NICU to the Burn Unit. This group has helped us to make important decisions to better the care for our patients and improve the experience for their families. Every new unit, renovation and in most cases policies are reviewed by this group to make sure we are focused on what the children need. This past month we lost one of our most active Members. Christina Akabidavis and her daughter were killed in an automobile accident during the month of May.

Christina was a true advocate for her children and wanted to make sure that everyone was treated appropriately in the Children's Hospital. She was very involved in her children's care and helped to teach all of our staff on the proper care of children with Sickle Cell Disease. She worked with our Children's ED to develop a protocol to evaluate and treat pain for Sickle Cell patients. Christina had planned to attend the next trip to Washington D.C. to advocate for children's hospitals to our legislators.

We all need to learn from Christina's example and make sure all children have access to quality health care and that the care that is provided is specific to the child and the family. Thank you, Christina, for all you have done for MUSC. We will all miss you.
