Letter From Our Chair

Dear faculty, Children's Hospital staff and other friends,

During the last month, we have seen heroic amounts of work completed that has allowed us to continue to improve our services and to provide the best care possible for the children of South Carolina. While we've certainly experienced a difficult reality check with the recent budget cuts and condition of our economy, we have also had an opportunity to do more than ever before. Together, we have tightened our belts and began working even harder to generate extra revenue to keep things running smoothly at MUSC Children's Hospital.

Message From Our Medical Director


This month's newsletter is a particular pleasure for me because it focuses on heart disease in children and my specialty is Pediatric Cardiology. I wanted to discuss two aspects of our program at MUSC and in South Carolina that are somewhat unique. The first, and the one that impacts the residents of our state the most, is a consortium of the pediatric cardiologists across the state known as The Children's Heart Program of South Carolina. Eleven specialists are with us at MUSC, four are at USC in Columbia, four are in the Greenville Hospital System, and one is in Florence. This collaborative program allows children with heart defects to be treated as locally as possible for their outpatient care but it also allows children in need of special procedures, such as heart catheterization or cardiac surgery, to be treated at MUSC where they benefit from the experience of a larger center.

During the month of February every year, we celebrate MUSC accomplishments in children's research. On February 12-13, 2009 we held the 4th Annual DCRI Children's Research Event with Visiting Professor Dr. Barry Byrne from the University of Florida.

March is heart month... you only have one heart so take care of it by choosing foods which promote heart health (fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products, lean meats, and whole grains). Balance your energy and calorie needs with exercise to achieve the best weight for health.
