Community Classes

The American Red Cross offers several classes specifically designed for young audiences.

Choosing Quality Child Care
Being a parent is a challenging and rewarding job. Finding quality care for your child is one of the most important duties you will perform as a parent. The primary purpose of this course is to help parents or caregivers make child care choices that best meet the needs of your individual circumstances. The course covers basic information about the types of child care available as well as useful information about licensing and accreditation, financing child care, and a thorough overview of the search process. This course is informative and enjoyable.

Basic Aid Training (BAT)
Children ages 8 to 12 learn emergency response skills, rescue breathing, and ways to prevent and care for choking, wounds, nosebleeds, falls and animal bites. This course includes responses for fire safety, poisoning, water accidents, substance abuse and more. Optional activities let you expand the 6-hour course to 12 hours.

First Aid for Children Today (FACT)
The FACT Critter Clan leads kids ages 5 to 8 through health promotion and injury prevention activities. Its environmental theme teaches safety in a non-threatening way. Topics include hygiene and health habits, first aid, personal safety and injury prevention.

Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program
Designed for children between 6 months and 5-years old, this program can help develop swimming readiness by teaching children to have fun in the water. Through guided practice sessions, children learn skills such as water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more.

Learn-to-Swim Program
The Learn-to-Swim program is divided into seven course levels. The participant must successfully complete one level before they can move to the next level. Each level addresses safety and rescue skills.

Babysitter Training
This very popular course gives 11- to 15-year olds the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. Combining video, activities, hands-on skills training and discussion for the most complete learning experience. Babysitter's Training Course has been reviewed and supported by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Girl Scouts of the USA, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA of the USA, Boys and Girls Clubs and 4-H.
