Children's Research Institute Takes Shape
A bright smile. A twinkle in the eyes. A carefree laugh. For a lot of
little reasons, the Medical University of South Carolina is campaigning
to build the Children’s Research Institute, a world-class
facility located in Charleston dedicated to improving the health of
children throughout the state and nation. So far, supporters have
pulled together to raise nearly $12.3 million of the $16 million in
private funds needed to complete the project.
Construction on track
If you’ve visited the Medical University’s campus lately, you’ve probably
seen the massive structure rising out of the ground on the
north side of the Basic Science Building. Construction is on schedule.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of the MUSC Planning
Department and builder MB Kahn, the Children’s Research
Institute will open its doors in January 2005, bringing new and better
treatments to children throughout South Carolina and beyond.
Today, 40 pediatric laboratories are scattered throughout the MUSC
campus, searching for ways to better treat and ultimately cure such
childhood diseases as multiple sclerosis, leukemia and diabetes. The
seven-story CRI will consolidate these research efforts into 150
state-of-the-art laboratory spaces. Within its halls, some of the
world’s most revered researchers will explore new treatments for
these diseases, just steps from MUSC
Children’s Hospital where they can be used for
hope and healing.
Funding and building this facility is a longterm
effort with immediate benefits that will
improve clinical services and research. This
state-of-the-art facility will attract and retain
top physicians. Its status as a dedicated
research center will enable MUSC to compete
more effectively for grants, generating greater
resources to find better treatments. It will provide
the children of South Carolina access to
the most advanced treatments as soon as they
become available. It will lend comfort and
cures to ailing children throughout our nation
and around the world.
MUSC Children’s Hospital is already South Carolina’s
largest, most comprehensive pediatric health center, and
a nationally ranked children’s hospital. The addition of
the Children’s Research Institute will make it stronger,
better and more efficient.
Private funding still needed
The Children’s Research Institute will cost $36 million to
build. Of this amount, $20 million in bonds and $12.3
million in private gifts have been secured. Pediatrics
Chairman Dr. Lyndon Key said public donations will
play a vital role in making the Children’s Research
Institute a reality.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the community’s support of this project. Their generosity brings us closer
each day to saving lives, improving health and establishing Charleston as an international center
for pediatric research.” said Key. “Based on the support we’ve seen so far, I’m confident that our
friends in the community – individuals, as well as businesses and civic groups – will step up to the
plate and make this happen.”
The Children’s Research Institute needs $3.7 million to achieve its goal. With your help, and for so many little reasons, it can be done.
