From the President
Dear Friends of the Children’s Research Institute,
At teaching hospitals such as the Medical University, there is a term
called "bench to bedside" that refers to the act of taking we learn in
research labs and applying it in a way that enhances patient care.
History has shown that the best way to optimize patient care is to move the
"bench" as close as possible to the "bedside." That is, to give our patients
more proximal and timely access to the most innovative treatment options
known to medicine. That is why we are now seeking to build the Children’s
Research Institute. The vision of former MUSC Pediatrics Chairman Charles
Darby, M.D., this seven-story structure will house top biomedical scientists
and the latest research technologies.
The Palmetto State has shown great support for this project. The university
is grateful for the leadership of businesses such as Nucor Steel and Blue
Cross Blue Shield and the commitment of citizens such as Linda Gadson and
Dave Kreber. With their help and that of hundreds of others, the Institute
has raised almost $12.3 million.
There is still work to be done. To give South Carolina’s children access to the
most advanced treatment and mark our state as an international center for
pediatric research, organizations and individuals must contribute the
remaining $3.7 million needed to complete this center.
Consistently recognized as one of the top children’s hospitals in the country,
the Medical University is already an established leader in children’s health.
We have deemed the Children’s Research Institute a top
priority, knowing it will further strengthen clinical care
and treatment options available right here in South
Carolina — moving our bench even closer to our bedside.
So much has been accomplished already on behalf
of South Carolina’s children. With your help, our
community can do even more.
Sincerely,
Raymond Greenberg, MD, PhD
President, Medical University of South Carolina
