Global Health Opportunities
MUSC pediatrics residency program supports and encourages residents interested in pursuing learning opportunities in pediatric global health. A curriculum was recently developed that focuses upon common medical and public health problems that impact children in less developed countries. Residents who would like to participate in an elective at an overseas site may be eligible to do so during their 3rd year of residency. The first step is to complete an application to determine interest level, reasons for wanting to participate, and schedule flexibility. Residents selected for participation, then take part in an orientation process that includes travel planning, pre-trip curriculum, and a review of learning objectives and duties for the clinical elective. In the past, residents have done research in Honduras and clinical work in Greece and Tanzania.
Dr. Andrea Summer is Co-director for the MUSC International Adoption Clinic and a mentor for residents interested in global health. She directs the clinical elective at Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. Funding for residents selected to participate in international settings has been available to continue the resident's salary for the time they are away, but travel expenses are the responsibility of the resident. Some overseas sites have affiliation agreements in place, but additional arrangements can sometimes be made if the resident has ties with a particular hospital or medical center in another area of the world.
At the completion of the overseas elective, the resident is expected to provide a patient log to the corresponding elective mentor and to present a discussion of his/her experience either in a noon conference or grand rounds setting.

This is a month long experience in a mission hospital in one of the larger cities near Mt Kilimanjaro. You work with Tanzanian physicians, clinical officers, residents and medical students to provide care to children on the inpatient wards, nursery, and outpatient clinics. Residents from MUSC are encouraged to go during the fall or late spring. Only one resident is accepted to participate for a given month.
