Internal Medicine & Pediatrics : About the Program

The combined residency program in internal medicine and pediatrics consolidates two excellent programs and provides a unique training experience. The program exposes the resident to every sub-specialty with an emphasis on primary care. This rigorous training program is designed to educate general physicians on complete range and depth of complex illnesses across the life span.

Upon completion of the program, residents will be eligible for board certification in both internal medicine and pediatrics. Graduates may elect to enter primary care private practice, general academic medicine, or sub-specialty fellowship training in either, or both specialty areas.

The combined residency program requires four years (48 months) of residency training, divided equally between internal medicine and pediatrics. The resident serves at a postgraduate training Level 1 for 12 months (6 months on each specialty).

Throughout the four years of training the resident rotates between services, alternating three month blocks on each service. While on each rotation and throughout the entire training period the resident serves as a catagorical resident for each program and attends all educational conferences for each rotation.

Continuity clinic experience continues throughout each rotation with alternating weeks in the internal medicine and pediatric continuity clinics.

In addition to educational conferences available in each program, residents in the combined program participate in specific internal medicine/pediatrics monthly conferences.
