Internal Medicine & Pediatrics : How to Apply
General Information
The selection of house staff is based upon academic records, transcripts, Dean's
Letters, three (3) letters of recommendation, and a personal interview.
We suggest obtaining letters from the chairperson of both the departments of
internal medicine and pediatrics. MUSC is an equal opportunity employer, and all

Our residency program participates in the National Residency Matching Program. Registration for the
matching program is handled through the Dean's Office of the applicant's medical school. To obtain

Application Process
The internal medicine and pediatrics program accepts applications only through
ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System).
Applications will be accepted through ERAS up to the closing date of the NRMP. Due to the heavy
volume of applications received, however, it is in the applicant's best interest to submit the
application, Dean's Letter, and all appropriate support materials to the Medical University of
South Carolina's Med/Peds program by the first week of November. Interviews are offered based
upon a schedule that accommodates both the department of medicine and the department of pediatrics
in order to allow applicants adequate exposure to both departments. Our program will notify you
of available dates when you are offered an interview. We will hold interviews from the second
week of November to January 31 with the exception of holidays.
We will give consideration to couples that are interested in pursuing residency training at
the Medical University in either the same or different programs.
Application Procedure for Foreign Medical Graduates
We define foreign medical graduates as graduates of medical schools outside the United States or
Canada, including American citizens granted medical degrees from a institutions outside the
United States or Canada. These graduates are required to do postgraduate medical training
in a United States training program before they can become either board certified or
licensed physicians in this country. The internal medicine and pediatrics program at MUSC
will consider applications from graduates of foreign medical schools who meet the following criteria:
Eligibility Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates:
- One full year (twelve months) of experience in the United States
- Graduation from medical school within the past two (2) years
- A score greater than or equal to 220 on Step I of the USMLE
Foreign medical graduate applicants not meeting these criteria will not be considered.
Additional documentation is also required to support the applications of foreign medical graduates.
We require a copy of applicants' Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates standard
certificate or interim certificate. We will consider applications while applicants' ECFMG
certificates are pending, but we will not finalize any appointments under any circumstances
until our program director has verification that applicants are ECFMG certified. Since the
ECFMG verifies applicants' training, MUSC does not require official copies of diplomas,
degrees, or other similar support materials. Further, applicants for positions in postgraduate
year two and above are required to have at least one year of postgraduate training in
an approved residency training program in the United States. Because postgraduate training
outside the United States is not recognized, applicants must supply letters of
evaluation from the chief of service at each United States hospital where the applicant has
trained. These letters should refer to the applicant's term of service and contain a
statement regarding the applicant's performance and ability.
Visa Sponsorship
The Internal Medicine / Pediatrics Residency Program will only sponsor
J1 VISAs. Foreign medical graduates should be aware that the program
will not make any special considerations for an H1B visa.
