Welcome from the Chief Residents in Meds/Peds

Michael Oltmann, MD

Evan Williams, MD
The Med/Peds Program at MUSC is truly the best in the nation. We are a small,
tightly-knit group of residents fully dedicated to mastering both internal medicine
and pediatrics. We take advantage of the absolute best educators on both sides. We
have impeccable facilities and ancillary staff, incredible patient variety, exposure
to high acuity care, a dedicated program director and coordinator, and best of all
an intelligent and motivated group of residents.
Mike and I aren’t exactly sure how we got into this program, but were glad we did
(there must have been an application error or something!). Now that we're here we are
at the helm of this fine, combined program with the responsibility of making a great
program even better. It’s going to be a tough job to fix what isn’t broken, but with
Dr. Salgado and Becky helping, chances are we won’t wreak too much havoc this year.
Seriously, we are very proud of this little program. I can honestly say that after
three years of working here, I am proud of my knowledge and expertise in both fields
and have a high level of comfort from the Newborn Nursery to the MICU. My training
has been intense but has allowed ample time for self-study. It has been well-balanced
with both autonomy and supervision. In the MICU I feel comfortable placing a central
line and writing ventilator orders with little supervision. At the same time, I feel
comfortable doing a well child check on a 4-month infant in clinic.
The best part of my training has been the mentality of the housestaff and attendings
here. There is constant teaching! The fellows, attendings, and even other residents
have fostered an environment of academia at MUSC that I have not seen at other
institutions.
Our faculty want us to excel. They treat us with the upmost respect and seem to delight in our
learning. I have never been chastised for asking a 'stupid' question and I feel very comfortable
with paging my superiors for help.
The Med/Peds program at MUSC is unique for many reasons. It is small. We take only two
interns each year. There is a total of eight in the program. This offers us freedom
that many larger programs don’t have. Because of this, as a group we have voted each
year to maintain our small size despite the ability to expand. Our size, allows us to
seamlessly transition from one side to the other. We have the autonomy to go to
morning report, noon conference, grand rounds, journal club, or board review.
We have the ability to choose from an almost endless number of academic conferences,
retreats, and social activities. We have first priority in choosing our electives.
Due to our size it is easy to fit in on both sides and be welcomed as a true member
of both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. We are treated as equals such that many of
our attendings even forget that we are Med/Peds!
We are fully integrated but at the same time, we have a unique identity as Med/Peds.
We meet together on Thursday afternoons in our conference room to do journal club,
board review, or just hang out and eat lunch. We lecture to the entire medicine and
pediatric departments each month about a topic pertaining to Med/Peds. We also meet
at least once monthly at outside of the hospital to have journal club and socialize
(or just socialize).
Our close-knit group has a history of developing life-long friendships. We help each
other in the clinic, on the wards, and often spend time together outside the hospital.
Many of our recent past graduates have even gone into practice together.
Well, I’m glad you have considered MUSC Med/Peds. Mike and I would love to hang out
and talk and answer any questions you may have about the program. Please feel free
to send us an email anytime and we hope to see you here in Charleston!
Sincerely,
Mike & Evan
