Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Training Program - Didactic
Didactic education includes scheduled lectures, supervised self-guided learning activities and
case-based discussions. Formal instruction in biostatistics and epidemiology is offered on a
bi-annual basis. Clinical conferences, journal club and a program in evidence-based medicine
are important aspects of our training program. Related meetings, including Cath Conference,
Surgery Conference and Cardiac Surgery Conference are also available.
Training in Neonatal-Perinatal Sciences:
- Interactive Neonatal Physiology: The program's core educational tool for instruction in basic sciences related
to neonatal-perinatal medicine. It is a Web-based interactive and self-motivated course based
on the program WebCT®. Cases encountered at MUSC provide the basis for an in-depth discussion
of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, genetics, embryology, biochemistry, and clinical
aspects of a disease process. Attending staff and fellows serve as facilitators for individual
cases. In addition to the Web-based portion of this course, a wrap-up conference is held at the
completion of each case. Face-to-face discussions serve to further expand on topics covered
during the on-line portion of the case. Completed cases are available for review on the teaching
Web site.
- Clinical Case Conference: Presentations of current or recent patients encountered in the intensive care nurseries or on obstetrics are presented and discussed. Discussion includes the basic science of the case as well as clinical decision making.
- Quality and Safety Case Conference: Situations, usually case-based, are discussed from a quality and safety viewpoint. Systems that work are identified and systems of care that might be improved are identified. Referrals to other quality improvement committees are made as needed. This is a multidisciplinary conference. Recent attendees include: pediatric subspecialists, translators, minority representatives, social workers, representatives from the ethics committee, NNPs, RNs, RTs, and representatives from the hospital legal section.
- Journal Club: Journal club is designed as an evidence-based medicine conference. A team of presenters moderate each discussion, usually including an NNP, a fellow and an attending. Usually clinical in nature, the basic science of the topic is reviewed then evidence is reviewed and classified. Critically appraised topic summaries are distributed. After the discussion, CATs are revised and posted on line. Referrals to our practice guideline or quality & safety groups may be made as needed.
- Fetal Board: Fetal Board and Perinatal M&M conferences are traditional in nature. These conferences are both clinical and educational in nature and are jointly produced by Perinatology and Neonatology.
