Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Training Program Goals
The goals of the training program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the Medical
University of South Carolina are:
- to improve the trainee's knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology
and management of clinical problems encountered in neonatal-perinatal care,
- to provide the foundation for trainees to pursue independent lines of investigation
related to that field, and
- to provide the scientific and analytical foundations needed to make clinical
decisions which are evidence-based, informed, and consistent with best practice guidelines.
An immediate, short-term goal is to expand the scientific and clinical expertise
of the trainee and provide the foundation upon which future clinical and scientific growth
can be based.
To address these goals, the training program provides education and experience in
the clinical management of sick and well newborns, involvement in discussions concerning
therapeutic approaches to the high-risk pregnancy, exposure to basic science and clinical
research, instruction in statistics and epidemiology, and "hands on" research experience
in a supervised setting.
