Volunteer Services : Meet Our Hairy Heroes!

Annabelle - Standard Poodle

Meet Annabelle

Annabelle is a Standard Poodle.  She was born in April 2003, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since May 2007. She is a Registered Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs, Inc., and is a proud recipient of the AKC Good Citizen Certificate.

Her special tricks include waving, saying prayers, sitting pretty, sitting like a lady, walking on her hind legs and curtsying on cue!  She loves playing dress-up for holiday parades at MUSC. She also enjoys walking local trails and visiting the beach when the weather is cool. Her favorite toy is a pink teddy bear, and her best friend is a kitty cat named "Tom kitten." 

Baron- Portugese Water Dog Meet Baron

Baron is a Wavy-Coated Portuguese Water Dog.  He was born in March 2009, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since August 2011. He is a Registered Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs, Inc., and is a proud recipient of the AKC Good Citizen Certificate, and AKC Show Ribbons. He has also completed a Canine Acting & Tricks class.

His special tricks include giving kisses, paws up, being a "bear," taking a bow, and jumping through a hula hoop. He is frequently bossed around by his 15 pound malti-poo sister, Nola. He loves salmon snacks, boat rides with his family, running on the beach, chasing tennis balls, getting his back rubbed, and a weekly trip to Lowes.  

Bentley - Cockapoo

Meet Bentley

Bentley is a Cockapoo.  He was born in August 2009, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since September 2010.  He is a Registered Therapy Dog, a Good Citizenship Award recipient and has completed three obedience classes.

His special tricks include waving, rolling over, standing on his hind legs and dancing. He likes to be patted on the head and read to by the kids at STAR LADSON.  He loves his doggy sister, Scamp, and follows her everywhere.  He also enjoys chasing games with his furry friend, Wrigley. 

 

Bernie - Portuguese Water Dog

Meet Bernie

Bernie is a Portuguese Water Dog.  He was born in November 2000, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since September 2003.  He is a Registered Therapy Dog, and received a TDIA Award after completing fifty visits to MUSC. 

Bernie enjoys riding around the hospital in his red Radio Flyer wagon so that kids can reach out and pat his head from their hospital beds.  He loves to eat raw broccoli and green beans, and splits his time between Charleston, SC and Salt Lake City, UT.  He hopes to achieve 150 hospital visits before retirement!

 

Chai - Border Collie

Meet Chai

Chai is a Border Collie.  She was born in February 2003, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since June 2006.  She is a Registered Therapy Dog, a recipient of the Canine Good Citizen Award and has won the title of runner-up in Frisbee Competition. 

Chai has her own style of "shake" and shakes her entire body on command!  She also likes to roll over for belly rubs from MUSC patients, staff and visitors.  In her free time, she enjoys chasing her ball into the ocean and riding the surf back to shore. 

 

Daphne - Black Lab/Hound Mix

Meet Daphne

Daphne is a Black Lab/Hound Mix.  She was born in March 2006, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since March 2009.  She is a Registered Pet Therapy Dog, the recipient of the Canine Good Citizenship Award, and a graduate of both PetSmart and Charleston School for Dogs Obedience School.

She likes to play football and games of "Hide-and-Seek" and can even put away her own toys!  She also enjoys eating spaghetti noodles, practicing yoga, listening to people read and sleeping.

 

Jetty - Golden Retriever

Meet Jetty

Jetty is a Golden Retriever.  He was born in August 2006, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since Spring 2008.  He has received AKC Certificates for Good Citizenship, Companion Dog, Companion Dog Excellent, and Utility Dog. He also earned High in Trial honors at an AKC Obedience Trial.

He is a fun dog and friendly to a fault. He loves going places, and has yet to meet a dog or person that he does not like.

 

 

Kami Lafae - Miniature Schnauzer

Meet Kami Lafae

Kami Lafae is a Miniature Schnauzer.  She was born in April 2009, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since September 2010.  She is a Registered Therapy Dog and Obedience School graduate.

Her favorite tricks include grabbing tissues with "A-Choo," sitting pretty, saying prayers, taking bows, looking sorry and dancing.  She even knows her right from her left!

She loves vacationing in the North Carolina mountains and eating peanut butter.

 

Maggie Rose - Giant Schnauzer

Meet Maggie Rose

Maggie Rose is a Giant Schnauzer.  She was born in June 2003, and has been volunteering with MUSC Children's Hospital since Spring 2008.  She is a Registered Therapy Dog, and AKC Canine Good Citizen and won first place in "Musical Sit."

Her favorite tricks include sitting like a lady, waving hello, sleepy girl pose, taking bows and dancing to "If You're Happy and You Know It."  She enjoys racing through the water at James Island County Dog Park.  She also earned her family a ranking in CHARLESTON DOGS magazine for "Top 10 Charleston Homes for UPS Delivery Man Exits"

 

Rommie - Leonberger

Meet Rommie

Rommie is a Leonberger.  He was born in July 2006, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since March 2010.  He is a Registered Therapy Dog, Companion Dog, AKC Canine Good Citizen, and a Rally Novice.

He gives wonderful kisses, sheds his coat faster than his mom can vacuum, opens latched and sliding doors and dusts the table with his tail.  He also loves to eat bacon, BBQ, tomatoes and whipped cream. 

In his free time, he enjoys sleeping, digging holes and shedding fur.

 

Scamp - Schnoodle

Meet Scamp

Scamp is a Schnoodle.  She was born in April 2008, and has been volunteering at MUSC Children's Hospital since June 2009.  She is a Registered Therapy Dog, a recipient of the Canine Good Citizen Award, and a graduate of Puppy Class, Intermediate Obedience, Real Life 101 and Tricks Class.

Her favorite routines include teaching kids fire safety by demonstrating "Stop. Drop. Roll & Crawl to Safety" techniques. 

She enjoys sharing scrambled eggs with her doggy brother, Bentley, and loves playing ball with her human parents!

 

Will - Australian Shepherd

Meet Will

Will is an Australian Shepherd.  He was born in September 2008, and has been volunteering with MUSC Children's Hospital since January 2010.  He is a Registered Therapy Dog and a recipient of the Canine Good Citizen Award.

He is often referred to as "The Tricks Dog" because of the large number of tricks he can perform.  His favorite tricks include pulling a hankie out of his handler's pocket when she sneezes and freestyle dancing.

His favorite pastimes include playing on the beach and chasing deer in the park.

 

Winnie - Miniature SchnauzerMeet Winnie

Winnie is a Miniature Schnauzer.  She was born in September 2000, and has been volunteering with MUSC Children's Hospital since April 2008. She is a Registered Therapy Dog.  

Her favorite tricks include twirling, telling secrets, catching treats, sleepy girl pose and dancing to "If You're Happy and You Know It."

She loves doing her tricks for the kids at MUSC.  She also enjoys getting treats and visiting James Island County Dog Park.

 

Woody - Golden Retriever

Meet Woody

Woody is a Golden Retriever.  He was born in November 2001, and has been volunteering with MUSC Children's Hospital since March 2005.  He has earned AKC Certificates for Canine Good Citizenship, Companion Dog Excellent and Utility Dog Excellent. He also won the title of Obedience Trial Champion in 2007 and has been inducted to the GRCA Obedience Hall of Fame. He retired from his AKC career in late 2008 and has accrued 425+ documented therapy visits since 2004. 

Woody has bravely endured three armpit surgeries, a tail amputation and a toe removal in his battle against cancer - making him an extra-sympathetic visitor to the Children's Hospital.
